Comparing the ISA of the 80x86 and the MIPS R2000

A new Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) was introduced for each wider subsequent word length and followed the 1985 introduction of the 80386. Though the ISAs of the 80x86 and the R2000 accomplish the same ends, they arrive at those ends via very different paths. It is likely that the 80x86 ISA will contintue to be developed because of continued backward compatibility, but the RISC approach is likely now to gain greater attention and acceptability as well.
