“Drag” Performance in the American Theater
[ send me this essay ]
This 15 page report discusses the history and impact of drag performances on the American theater. One of the reasons that drag performance, whether in a drag queen show or in the “legitimate” theater, titillates, amuses, and shocks people is that it plays with gender’s most honored and traditional beliefs and celebrates the confusion of social and sexual identities. Drag is definitely not found only in the homosexual community, but also in other worlds of cross-dressing: straight men dressing in drag for personal thrills and people in the performing arts donning drag as part of a show. In the a dramatic performance, cross-dressing establishes a realm that differs from daily preconceptions of life -- just as drama itself does. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

"Invisibility" and Homosexuality
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page discussion of the phenomenon of becoming "invisible" as a means of dealing with societal prejudice. Examines the choice of some homosexuals to keep their homosexuality restrained. Concludes that invisibility only causes tremendous ambivalence and distress, and reiterates the contentions of the film "Torchsong Trilogy" that self-hatred is the greatest enemy of the gay world. Invisibility is as much victimization as is a hate crime which targets homosexuals. It is, however, a victimization in which the victim is also the perpetrator. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

"Option Four" By Ramesh Ponnuru: Review
[ send me this essay ]
3 pages in length. Today, in the seventh year of the twenty-first century, the social, economic and moral battle continues to rage over gay marriage - a concept author Ramesh Ponnuru sees as a debate that is missing one pertinent option for a compromising resolution. His article entitled "Option Four: A Compromise on Gay Marriage" strives to illustrate both the soundness and fallibility of each side and ultimately offer a fourth option to the standard three that are routinely rejected. No additional sources cited.

"Organizing And Activating Effects Of Sex Hormones In Homosexual Transsexuals": Summary & Critique
[ send me this essay ]
2 pages in length. Understanding the propensity towards transsexuality has perplexed the medical community for decades. Not only is this particular population subcategorized by many different variables, but any definitive findings about why this behavior exists has eluded psychological and physiological research time and time again. Authors van Goozen et al (2002) attempt to piece together a logical progression of events that may occur while the fetus is still within the embryo as a means by which to correlate reasons behind homosexual transsexualism through hormone treatment.
